Social enterprises are businesses that trade for social and environmental purposes. They can provide everything from chocolate to fashion and from music to recycling.

Well known examples of social enterprises include The Big Issue, Jamie Oliver's restaurant Fifteen, and the fair-trade chocolate company Divine Chocolate.

The Social Enterprise in Schools Award is a competition that aims to recognise and champion schools in England that are successfully running a similar enterprise.

Whether the problem is based in the local community or on a more global scale, this prize will be awarded to the school that is able to show that it has found the most creative and effective business solution.

Does your school have a social enterprise that:

a)    is helping to solve a problem?

b)    shows a collective entrepreneurial spirit?

c)    has been running for at least one academic year?

If you have answered yes to all of the questions above, then your school will be able to enter this competition.

Please note that only one entry per school will be accepted; although schools are allowed to be running more than one social enterprise at any one time.

Applications will be accepted from 14th July till 26th October 2009.

Three schools will be shortlisted for the prize and announced on 19th November. They will then go head to head in an on-line public vote.

The winners of which will be announced at an award ceremony in London.  Representatives from each shortlisted school will be invited to attend the award ceremony which will take place on 3rd December.

The prize of Social Enterprise in Schools award will go to the most enterprising school. The winner will receive £1,000 and will be featured in a special supplement in the Daily Telegraph.
